Soccer at Y.E.S.C.A. The YESCA soccer fields have been reseeded and repaired, and beginning on Saturday, May 1, YESCA will sponsor practice sessions for three school soccer teams: eight and under, ten and under, and twelve and under. Practice sessions will be held on the fields to the left of the school building, and will start at All students must be equipped with (1) soccer boots (no metal cleats); (2) soccer shin guards; (3) sports shorts (no military style please, and no pockets); (4) long sleeve or short sleeve tee-shirts, preferably loose fitting with no buttons, writing, or images; (5) a soccer ball with the student’s name written on it; students on eight and under and ten and under teams will need a size 4 ball; students on the twelve and under team will need a size 5 ball; (6) a water bottle with student’s name; and sunscreen. Soccer equipment is available at “Target” and “Ross” stores. ![]() Coaches will be YESCA parents Rolando Altamirano and Martin Carrion, who aim to create a winning team. Rolando notes that soccer creates a more balanced mental and physical life, and that with discipline and skill, the game improves self-control and the ability to focus. He wants to see students learn to play together, and intends to enforce Yuba Soccer League rules regarding sportsmanship and control of language. |

Recycling at Y.E.S.C.A.: YESCA runs public recycling programs for plastic, paper, bottles, cans, and batteries. The school works with the Yuba-Feather Lions Club, which picks up everything except the batteries. The battery program enlists cooperation from Yuba-Sutter Recology (formerly Yuba-Sutter Disposal). Our fourth and fifth grade teacher, Tara Taber, initiated battery recycling at the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year as a class project. Her class also uses recycled copier paper for class assignments. Regarding battery recycling, Ms. Taber reports that there are a few tricks to it. One of the most sobering is the need to tape battery ends. “If any energy passes between the terminals, you can start a fire.” A relentless recycler, Ms. Taber allowed her class to experiment with recycling print cartridges and cell phones, but too few showed up to maintain the program. By contrast, “the kids are fascinated with battery recycling. Right now our collection box has too many to count.”
